Default swing arm bushings and lube

I am no where needing this but I haven't noticed anyone saying they pulled swing arm and linkage and changed the bushings or even lubed them.

In passed motorcycle lives that was de rigueur for bikes with like 20,000

Some even install some zerk fittings for the next time

Who has etc

I cleaned and greased the swingarm and suspension bearings at 50,000 miles. They were in fine shape. They are all caged needle bearings. For a zerk fitting to work, it would need to be in the arm between the bearings and the whole arm filled with grease so it would be force through and out of the bearings. It's not a big need.

I replaced and lubed the shock bearing linkages when I changed the shock at 150K. They all needed replacing. I should have done it sooner. I didnt remove the swingarm to grease or check on those bearings at the time so now at 256K they're probably aching for a lubing or replacement.

I found that the wheel bearings can go 100K unless you are off roading a lot. When replacing them get the sealed bearings from your local bearing store. Probably better quality and much cheaper than OEM.

BelRay waterproof grease is an excellent choice for greasing the swing arm bearings. It is made from an aluminum complex thickener and much more water resistant than the common lithium or lithium complex greases.

Did all the linkage bearings twice. Once around 50,000k's, next around along with the swing arm @~100,000.

All the bearings were fine, but the grease was running a bit thin both times.

The swing arm bushes are a pig, but with the DL 650 you can pull the shaft and swing the swingarm back and inspect the left side bushes (without dismantling the rear of the bike) then push in a good waterproof grease until it oozes out the far end. Not elegant and uses a lot of grease, but a lot quicker and at least as effective as doing the job "properly".

Pete

When I did the swingarm bearings at 35K miles they had very little grease in them, but were still fine. I removed the bottom shock linkage, SA shaft (no special tools required) and the SA bearings. I did not remove the exhaust. I used Belray WP grease and reassembled. It took me about an hour, but I'm slow and methodical about doing maintenance; plus I tend to triple check everything. BTW- Next I did the steering stem bearings (no special tools required either) and they were in about the same shape; very little grease but still in good shape.

Default bonus work

I did mine at around 40k and they were in need of it.

Removing the swingarm required, at least the way I saw it, removing the exhaust because it is routed thru the swing arm.

This caused two broken bolts on the front head. I went to remove the exhaust flange and pop pop.

Not good.
