When you get inside the sprocket cover, "fumble fingers" and later a poor memory will help you make mistakes that will cost you time and money -- maybe not much, but a frustrating amount anyway. You'll get the idea that it's a good time to "clean out in there" (and it is) but be careful of the clutch slave unit, the clutch push rod, the seals that can be pushed back into the engine (and damaged during retrieval attempts), and the proper placement/replacement of the different-length bolts and spacer. When you look back after a day with things apart, it is not necessarily obvious the proper reassembly! Believe me, I know!

Here's a link to a search topic on the "sprocket area" from the VSRI forum. While you're there, search on "DL 1000 chain replacement", for example, and click at will to get the collective wisdom for sprockets, chains, cush rubbers, and so on.

I'm going to 16-45 which should make it a little easier to use the o/d without running so fast.

My question is, do the 520, 525 and 530 chains all run on the same sprockets?

Thanks
I can't count I guess, there's 114 links.
Now my chain memory is refreshed and I can report what little I know.
Bought my first replacement chain and sprockets from SV racing, bought the chain breaker/rivet tool also. Good chain, good sprockets lasted easiily 12000 mi. could be more wasn't keeping good records at that time.
The chain tool is first rate as well in fact I've taken to riveting on dirt bike chains, just easier than fooling with that little clip.

In due time I replaced this setup. Did not buy from sv, probably for got where I got the first one. This one had an aluminum rear sprocket which wore out quickly. It looked fine when I took off on a weekend trip but when It started to wear it went south fast. The front sprocket had just begun to wear and the chain, when laid link to link with a new chain had no discernible stretching.

So, I got reacquainted with SV Racing, ordered up a 16/45 kit and installed it today. This kit was substantially less $$$ than a comparable set from Rocky Mt. Literally $60 less. Never again will I use an aluminum sprocket.
SV shipped that stuff out in a big hurry too.

525, 530, unsprung weight, heavier, lighter, blah blah blah. weight saving on a bike as heavy as the vee is laughable.

but out of curiosity how much weight difference is there between a 525 and a 530?

In my experience over the last 45 years I have replaced dozens of chains, all with the clip-style manster link and have never had a failure, even with much horsepower/speed on some of my bikes. When I replace the original chain on my Vee I'll probably find a deal on a chain on ebay and install it with a simple master link. I know its old school but it has worked for me for all these years.
