Default Motul 5100 10W50 ok?

Hey guys,

Just did an oil change on my DL1000 (64,000km) and realised in my haste I picked up Moutl 5100 10W50 instead of Motul 5100 10W40. . Its already in the bike, I was just going to leave it as I didnt think it would do any harm.

Just wanted to confirm it should be ok untill the next change?

Thanks!

It's fine. Don't worry about it.

It's not what I would choose, but that weight is still in spec according to Suzuki. Ride and be happy.

According to the Suzuki manual, 10W-50 is acceptable and is good for -20C through 40C.

... which is a far wider range than I'm good for.

That is the "perfect" weight and viscosity to run ALL YEAR LONG, especially in a twin.

Great,

Thanks for the replies guys.

Big B. What do you see as the advantage of the 10W50 over the 40? I a bit of a philistine when it comes to little changes in oil like this. I tend not to care as long as it good quality and does the job.

The advantage of higher viscosity engine oil is that it offers more protection when very hot. Not when the engine parts are hot enough to bake the oil into carbon, but hot enough that a lighter viscosity gets so thin that it doesn't hold the protective film between parts at the hottest points inside the engine. I'd use a 50 wt. where temperatures are regularly over 90°F and certainly over 100°F. Our water-cooled engines have air-cooled oil coolers. In moderate temperatures the higher viscosity will cause more engine drag and cost a bit of fuel economy.

Well, I disagree.

I think you ought to drain it VERY CAREFULLY into an appropriate container and send it to me. I'll give it a proper burial

As I understand things, a 10w-50 is the same viscosity as 10-40... Just doesn't thin out as easily... and a 20w-50 oil is thicker but protects up to a similar heat/abuse range as a 10w-50. Somebody please correct me if I am off-base...
