Default Front Suspension sag adjustment

I have read most of the threads that are posted on sag calculation and adjustment (including the links to VSRI form that GW had posted) last night. So I thought I should check mine (~28K miles).
I know how to adjust the load on the rear, that is in the manual.
But I couldn't find any reference in the manual on adjusting the front preload and any markers (like the rings you count on the rear preload).
Can someone point it out, which is the Front preload adjustment bolt/nut? Is it the steering head nut on top of the tree?
I checked on that in the manual. It doesn't say anything about checking or adjusting it. In fact where it shows the reassembly (Chassis section) it says to tighten it to 45Nm but in the Periodic maintenance section it shows the spec as 90Nm. And requires a special tool?
Confused.

The caps on the top of the forks have a slot machined into them to accept either a really giant screwdriver... or a quarter.

If they are turned all the way in, the pre-load is max'ed and you won't see the adjustment lines. If they're not, you'll see lines scribed around them about 1/4" apart.

Thanks Steve68steve. I don't see any slotted adjustment screw on the fork cap bolt. The caps are flat and I don't see any lines scribed on those either. I have a 2002 DL1000. May be they changed the design later?

Yup, just found out from another post and the schematics that they did change the design. Old '02 does not have any front preload adjustment.
Not sure when they changed it but looks like may in '03.

You can still adjust it....you just have to make a longer spacer to go on top of the spring. ( #17)

Thanks Heavy. That is a bit more involved than turning a bolt ... so for now I am going to leave it alone.
Because of all the posts in recent weeks I was just checking my suspension, and was wondering how to adjust it if I have to. I don't think it is so bad that I need to address it right now. If it comes to that and have to open it up, I will probably look at changing the springs too.
Thanks.
