Following on to M.L.'s thread, I propose an o'nighter on Saturday Nov. 24th and Sunday 25th. V-Chops P.M.ed me with a map he thought would fit and it is exactly what I had in mind.
Don would you post that map up here for those who don't know the area?

I'm away from the computer till next Monday. Anybody wanting to join in can indicate so here, even if they cannot be definite at this point in time. Accommodation will be organised in the coming weeks I'm sure there will be a suitable spot for those who want to camp somewhere close to town. I'll probably need a real bed although I'd love to camp.

I'm meeting my brother at Temora this weekend to watch the air display. The old Sabre will be among those flying. Back on Monday.

Thats all right Wardy, you go off with your head in the clouds, we''ll do the orginisin' for ya :biggrinjester:
Here's the proposed route, changes can be made if anybody has better plans

A few months ago I stayed at the Crookwell Hotel/Motel. Good beer, big menu and the room was ok for the money, undercover parking if you beat the locals

Hi Chops, here are a few proposed twisty (and fun) back roads to include that would keep us off the major roads. (The amended route will also take us past the Tarana and O’Connell Hotels and also miss the Bathurst Main road congestion

Day 1 – Rydal, Tarana and Lagoon rd that ends at the entrance to Mt Panorama.
Day 2 – Shooters hill road to Oberon

Outside Lithgow there is the Ace (or Pit Stop) Cafe just south of Hartley on the Great Western Highway that could be the 2nd meeting point, it is very close to the Cox River rd intersection at Little Hartley (and it has home made pies in the warmer)

The O’Connell Pub end of Tarana road currently has a short section of dirt due roadwork’s at that end.

I will say a possible yes for this one.

Brian, what are you planning to ride?

Maybe I could lend you the KLE and I will take my Wee.

Or if you are taking the Honda I will take the KLE [we can both be the "slow" ones then :fineprint: ]

I keep wanting to do a camping run on the bike, but pub would be ok for this one.

Hi all , what time do you think you will be leaving McDonald's Blaxland ?
looking to meeting the ride outside lithgow at the turnoff to Oberon.

Hi Wardy & Ors, I think I will join you on this ride, pub stay sounds good.

Chops it'd be a good chance to catch up and chat about Tassie Ride

I had to do this.......... Saturn 5 wants to go to crook and well. It struck me as a bloke who is sticking his middle finger up at the grim reaper. By the way, as a QLD base rider where the Hell is the place. I supose have to ride in a blue footy jumper to get into the place. Never mind I was born south of the fence.
Hey I have birth papers to prove it.

Two tanks and Im there ( unless the NSW police give me an overnighter)

Thanks for your input Thunder, but if you are feeling a bit crook you go there to get well :biggrinjester:
It's sorta between Goulbourn and Bathurst. It is the heart of spud growing country and is usually very cold, that keeps all the maroon wearing people away :green_lol:

#16 ·
Thanks ML, but cant find your cafes on the map. May I suggest that if we have a second meeting place, our first one could be Maccas at Richmond. That way we can do the Bell's Line to Bell then across to Mt Vic. The westerners can meet us there at the Imperial maybe.
Not sure of time Wardy wants to start, but it's only about 5 Google hours to Crookwell from Richmond.
Crookwell caravan park doesn't have cabins, camp sites only, $9 pp for unpowered sites. Spud Murphy's is just up the road on the way to the pub :yesnod:

mcdonalds near Richmond, New South Wales to Oberon NSW - Google Maps

But this is Wardy's (Saturn 5) ride, he can make the final decisions, we are just helping him out :biggrinjester:

Richmond and then Bells of Line sounds good,
The Pit Stop (Ace) Cafe is 100m north of where Browns Gap Rd meets the Great Western Highway at Hartley, Its walls are covered in bike memorabilia. The café wasn’t upgraded and painted when the Google maps car went past, but you can see the old building on satellite and street view. Just throwing ideas around atm, all roads lead to the crookwell pub :)

I'm got back from Temora yesterday arvo but missed the air show as my brother, driving up from Vic. had car trouble at Narrandera with a blocked fuel filter.
The ride down and back was great, the country was every shade of green and I have never seen so much of this country under crop and thick dense crops they are too. This is my first long trip since my Bingara problem and to-day ain't a whole bag of laughs for me. I hope to do another trip or two before I finally call it a day on touring, as I promised myself I would.

Crookwell; well I'm heartened to see the early response. Great to see some of the old names showing interest, I'm looking forward to catching up fellers, as well as meeting up with those who's names I know but I have yet to meet. Anyone heard from D.L? Thunder is planning to come down from QLD, hope you can get a riding mate or two Thunder.

I'll look at the itinerary to-morrow, when I feel a little more human, and decide what would be the most convenient route, meeting places and times that will best suit the majority. I know that Muddy, Chops and Astro have an hour or two to ride to get to a meeting point. Let me know fellers what suits from your end ( and anyone else who have an early start) as the ride belongs to all who turn up.

Back again to-morrow..

Saturn 5.... feeling to-day like I've ridden to the moon and back.

Glad you got home alright Wardy, sorry to read that the trip took it's toll on your well being
Also sorry to read that you didn't get to the air show, as I know you are a keen aviator watcher. :headbang: Hope your bro got home ok

The trip to Crookwell isn't that long, so we could have the departing time as late as 9-9.30. Meet the other blokes at the Ace an hour or so later, 10.30-11. We could have a stop at Tarana 12-12.30 and be in Bathurst by 1.30. Do a lap, away by 2-2.30 and be in Crookwell around 4- 4.30 with a stop at the Abercrombie or Tunea along the way. (these are Google Map times and are easily achieveable) Hope these times tally up :yesnod:
Hope you don't mind me sticking my nose in Wardy :biggrinjester:

That is one of the best local ride routes with mountain passes, followed by sheer cliff faces to a bike café, followed by rolling country hills with a pub stop (or two) :) followed by Australia’s premier race circuit, followed by dirt runs, and finished with a cold beer
…but your map doesn’t include Lagoon Rd (next left after O’Connell pub and onto The Lagoon) which takes you strait to Mt Panorama, there is only a very short bit of roadwork’s at the last remaining tiny bridge crossing on this road, (I rode it last weekend on the way home from Tumut) and its usually less time to the mountain than negotiating any traffic in Bathurst. Whatever route the ride leader goes with is OK with me; these are local runs I can ride anytime :) :) :)

I hope my jobs at work are all in NSW around Nov !!!!

Crookwell O'nighter..

Go for it Don. You saved me the effort. I know these roads well, having ridden them many times since 1996 when they used to be patches upon patches and or holes. Mostly fixed up now but not all of it, it'll test the Strom's 150mm suspension but someone riding Orange will do it easy.
Including Lagoon road and a lap of Mt. Panorama I'm as happy as!! This is working out easy for me as the meet up times and places suit me just fine. I'm pleased to settle on these suggestions.
As yet I have not checked accommodation but for me, camping, as much as I love round the camp fire chat and starry skies, ( hence "Saturn 5" ) is getting difficult for me now. If I can't find a pub/motel bed I really do need a hand to set up and take down my tent and gear which makes it so much easier. Pathetic isn't it?

OCK: Mate I'd love to take your KLE for a run, you can ride my Strom and I could compare them back to back, which is the best way to compare.

I hope we can get a few more to join in. Don't forget I have room at home for anyone wanting to bunk down closer to the meeting points. I'm at Winmalee, near Springwood.

G'day Ozzy; I'm looking forward to meeting you and the others so I have faces to go with names. I know the roads in the central west quite well as Dubbo was my home town many moons ago. There are many great roads in your part of the world as there are a lot more curves around Orange than is found further out west. My ( poor ) reference to "Orange", was referring to Muddy (Glen) who now rides KTM, but your take on it was relevant too.
Lets now hope for good weather as I will never camp in the rain again. I first met Chops ( Don) at a wet BMW rally a few years ago now and that was the very last wet camp for me!!

When V Chops suggested the Crookwell overnighter I had a grin as months ago we had already booked a night at the Crookwell pub for our return ride from Thredbo last weekend :) so I would get to check half of the roads beforehand. I also rode the Hartley vale – Cox River Rd – Tarana section a few weeks ago with some sports bike riding mates (also ex trail bike riders) for a Sunday pub lunch run.
The Hartley Vale road dirt section is in good nick and there is a dirt roadwork’s section in Hartley vale. The Cox River Rd dirt is OK and there are also dirt roadwork’s sections on that road, so by the time you get to the Lowther wind farm you have already ridden a bit more dirt than usual. The ride from Hampton to Bathurst is now all tar as roadworks have finished on that part (for now)
Then heading south to Crookwell the dirt sections north of the Abercrombie bridge are a bit corrugated but not too bad, the Abercrombie Caves reserve is a good break (with toilets) and a short dirt detour. South of the Abercrombie bridge all the dirt sections have been graded last week so they are all good fun atm.
Looking forward to having a beer with any familiar faces that turn up, and also a chance put faces to names. Hopefully my work commitments line up, so far so good.

OK, back after some distractions. So who is coming to Crookwell 24th Nov?
This is the interest so far:
Mountain Lagoon
Ockerstrom
Mudrat
Astro
V-Chops
Saturn 5
Normo
Giddy Goanna
OzzyP38arover
Thunderdownunder..(from QLD )

Some people cannot be definite at this stage. Have I missed any or is any one else wanting to join in?
The hotel is booked as M.L.informed us but Spud Murphy has a variety of room available at this stage. There is camping at the caravan park.
I'm looking forward to catching up with some old faces and meeting new.
Meeting points can easily be confirmed once we know who is coming.

I hope we can see some more join in.

Stretch 49: I spoke to Danielle the lady at Spuds and she said she has a number of rooms with different configurations available at varying costs starting at $45ea share up to $85/90 for a double with en-suite. I said I wasn't sure of numbers at this point in time but maybe as many as 10 abut some may want to camp. She also said she would phone me if she had a large booking inquiry and we get first option. I plan to have a bed here if others are interested too. I'd love to camp but my sleep pattern is all over the place getting up 3/4/5 times a night.
What do others prefer? Caravan Pk camp or maybe bush camping? M.L. do you know if there is good bush camping available? Maybe some would like this way to camp.
Chime in fellers.

The CP is run by the local council, there isn't any onsite accomodation. A unpowered site is $9 pp and the park is only a short walk to the first pub, an another block to the next one
Muddy is a possible maybe and he is camp......ing, oops :jawdrop:

Carefull Chops I still have "THOSE" photos you know :green_lol:

as for me camping not worried either way, happy to go with the flow.
I need to get a fair bit done, to the bike (just got back from a 3 day ride on the south coast) before I can confirm my attendance
