As Steve said on the day, we tried to cover in two hours what would normally be a two day course. I had heaps of fun and personally would like to do more of these days. I hope every one got something out of the morning, practice makes perfect and without it you have to think too much, the drills we where showing need to become an automatic body reaction, practice practice practice !!!
Ride safe and catch you all next time Steve, I was thinking my old property (my father in law now lives there) may be a good place for the next day. We could do more drills on the flat near the house. Just a thought ?

I heard someone got pinged & ticketed on the way home! That'd put a damper on the morning.

Couple photos from Stu
Chef demonstrates: "It's all in the hips." Chef says he's almost as tall as me when he tippy-toes on the pegs.

Well I finally did the two day Adventure Riding Training course up on the Sunshine Coast hinterland on the weekend, and I've got to say I had an absolute blast.
Todd, the Instructor, did a great job of leading me through from a complete off road noob, through a bunch of Q Ride style drills that built up to being comfortable up on the pegs doing all sort of manoeuvres I would have put money on me not staying upright. I initially thought the Q Ride style of things was a bit of a let down at the start, but as things progressed, it was a really great way to get a firm foundation for the dirt road ride we went on up in the Glass House Mountains in the afternoon of day 1. Great stuff up there, and loads of dirt bike riders out enjoying themselves too. It was like some sort of secret world out there, populated by ADV and dirt bike riders, with the odd 4WD thrown in. Day 2 was a right in the deep end, tracking back up to the dirt roads of day 1, but this time we went deeper into the secret world, where the roads were rougher and the land of sand began. Day 2 was all about sand. I was on stock 2012 Wee tyres, down to about 25psi. More Q ride style drill in sand. Weaving in and out of the deeper stuff, wheelspin gyroscopic effect to keep her upright, posture and position on the pegs for steering, centre of gravity, braking, recovery (when the inevitable happens and over you go). The day was rounded out nicely with techniques to turn around on a too-steep slope using an intentional stall and engine/clutch braking to bring the bike around safely and paddle the front wheel back downhill. All great techniques, and well put together on an enjoyable and eye opening course. I was really surprised and impressed at what the bike was capable of on the stock tires in the sand, and I'm sure if it actually had someone on with ability it'd be even better. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and now I know there's secret world out there, I'm determined to get out there and find out more. |

It was (unintentionally) a solo gig. I just made a normal booking, expecting there to be others on the course, but it was just me and Todd. He did say it was a bit late in the year, and this course would probably be his last until the end of summer, as it gets a bit too hot and uncomfortable to do all-day training sessions out there, and I can kind of understand why. Still happy as Larry with what he taught me on the course - it's been fun putting into practice this week manoeuvring in close quarters and I've been getting up on the pegs at every opportunity. |
