Default Get Tassie booked 2013

Hi all! Haven't done much riding lately, been a bit backseat.
OK I am thinking of booking Tassie about 14 days. My idea is to book 4 locations say 4 nights Launceston NE area, then move south to Hobart area 3 nights. Next off to Strahan 3 nights then Burnie in the NW ??? nights then Devonport for the trip home.
Doing it this way, most of the day riding will be without luggage and many day loops can be planned. Is this a good idea?
Any suggestions along these lines, time is ticking need to book soon.
Thinking along lines of caravan park cabin accom. travelling in small groups always fun.

Black Widow your idea is a good one as plenty of options for day rides from each spot and still get to see plenty of Tassie in the process. I plan to be in Tassie for 12-14 days and you might also want to include one night along the mid east coast between the Launceston and Hobart stops as a lot to see along there and day trips will be a tight fit from either Launceston or Hobart with a lot of riding but not much sightseeing otherwise. Think about somewhere like Coles Bay, Bicheno area for the overnight stop possibly to make each day more relaxed time wise.
I will be staying at a cousin's place outside Deloraine for a the 1st few nights, then onto Coles Bay/Bicheno area for a night, followed by Hobart for a day or 2, then Zeehan to stay at my auntie's place. I'm staying in pubs/motels when not staying with family and not camping this trip to save amount of gear carried. The plans are pretty flexible as I tend to watch the weather reports to determine where to go when to avoid crappy weather especially on the West Coast. My 1st trip I didn't do this and spent the day riding from Lake Leake to Strahan and the area copped 100mm of rain that day so don't want to experience that again!!!

I might post up some ideas for places for folk to visit in each area that I've been on my trips south to help give some ideas of what to see and do on the island as plenty there to see and enjoy.

Hi BW, hope you two are well and will get a bit more time in the saddle soon.
Below is my tank bag ride sheet for our 35-40day Tassie ride. Our route from home to Pt Melbourne has some detours to visit family and friends but once in Tassie our day rides are all about half a day as we plan to get going strait after breakfasts and arrive at the next destination by lunch so we can see the tourist sites in the afternoons. We are allowing an extra 5 days to stop and rest or if needed to let any bad weather pass over and will just tour at our own pace and timings.

Maybe you can combine a few of my ride sheet “loops” to have some bigger rides? We are also staying in pubs, motels or caravan parks and are based in Launceston and Hobart for a few consecutive days to leave the luggage off the bike to ride some of those mountain passes.

I would like to offer a stop over at my place for southward bound Stromtroopers (with references) or small groups travelling through NSW to the annual gathering, we live between Putty Rd and Bells of Line Rd.

For anyone who was thinking of riding 735 kms of continuous mountain twisties from Walcha down Thunderbolts Way to Dungog then through Singleton to Putty Rd then Bells of Line to Lithgow to Oberon to Taralga to Goulburn etc… we could be a halfway rest stop, there is a pressure washer here to blast the bugs off your screen.
Just type Blaxland’s Ridge NSW into Google maps and you will get our general location. We live on 10 acres in a small cottage, there is a level grassed area near the cottage and a cast iron fire pit, its rock, paper, scissors to get the spare room bed or couch. Our parents will be house sitting while we are away, so unfortunately they will “release the hounds” if any bikes arrive after out departure date.

Have fun planning the adventure, our bookings have been made only as far as getting to Launceston then Arthur River after that is all a seat of the pants adventure (my ride sheets always end up covered in scribble’s of where we actually ride)

Default Tassie Is A Paradise For Bikes

Howdy black widow

Sounds like a great trip.

I did a ride around Tasmania 3 years back with some friends. Being from Hobart originally I had a fair idea of where to go and what to see, here are a few hints:

Not so sure about the stay in 1 spot for 3+ nights. There's a rich variety of budget accommodation and plenty to see, that you can spend the 14 days quite easily staying at different spots.

If you get a window of good weather on the West Coast, head on over. It rains something like 400 days of the years (nope, not bad at maths, that's how much it rains!) so grab the clear weather when you can.

Having said that, we did our trip in early May and the weather was amazing. Blue skies 95% of the 11 day trip.

Must sees:
  • Ride to the top of Mt Wellington in Hobart
  • If you're comfortable on gravel road (I'm a rubbish rider and did this road fine), ride the silica road through from Waratah to Corrinna in the North West. Magical.
  • The Sidling just outside Scottsdale - brilliant winding road
  • Enjoy a cafe lunch on the water's edge in Boat Harbopur
  • Have a beer at Knopwoods Retreat in Salamanca (Hobart)
  • Enjoy a bowl of the Drunken Admiral's Seafood Chowder down on the waterfront (Hobart)
  • Get to the top of the Nut in Stanley
  • Have a wine at Pipers Brook Vineyard (in the Tamar Valley)

I wrote up a web site on it - I won't post the address until I read the rules of the forum re posting web addresses. Just do a search for "Tasmanian Motorbike Trip" and you'll soon find it.

It has our itinerary, notes on where we stayed, tons of photos and videos.

Hope that helps.

Default Tassie rally 2013

Hoping to catch up in Tassie with many of you I met at Bingara. Toured Tassie by car several years back and wished I was on a bike. I like the idea of setting up a base in a motel or pub for a few days then day tripping. Nice to come back to a hot shower dry bed rather that having to waste time finding new accommodation each day and or setting up a tent.

Cheers

Bummer
Just realized the date is a bit close to the KLRRR on 23-24 March.
Maybe in 2014 we can space the KLRRR out a bit so I can get to both.
