Default Heated Grips Update

Hi all , hope your enjoying the weather as much as we are in Orange , about 4C most of the day (How is it in the mountains) Finely finished wiring the grips today , i got them working last weekend but was unhappy with the short #rapy wires and how hot the resistor got when on low (it may melt something) so i have replaced the wires with some covered twin core wire / rerouted the wiring up both sides of the steering head and across to the switch via the fairing mount and done away with the resistor by using a DPDT switch (thanks GreyWolf for the info).

Very happy with the setup now , tidy and works well .

I like the idea of fitting the grips i want over the heaters but i wont buy the same kit again , steer clear of the uncovered wiring and the resistor type .
A couple of pics of the finished job

Default 1° C here in Katoomba

Hi Ozzy Strom. 1° C here in Katoomba at the moment. Cold! Was out on the bike during the afternoon after Lida got home from soccer at Emu Plains. She rode down and back..grips working..makes life here comfortable. Son Dylan got his L plates last Monday and has experienced all possible conditions over the last seven days. We are a 'Heated Grip Family' ! best wishes. Rod

Heh, heh. I was chatting via email to I guy I know in the South Island and he did a trip the other day when it was -8 when he hit the road. Apparently the ice alert on his new Wee never went out all weekend. He still hasn't got around to installing hot grips yet.

Mine have been put to use a lot lately...

Hi banditrider , that is bloody cold what type of tyres is he using "ice tyres" , he must be using heated gear of some kind
Just shows no matter how cold or hot it is when your riding someone else is ether colder or hotter then you are

I couldn't ride in temps that low , i have had a op that has damaged my nose , it doesn't warm the air like it should , i would need to breathe warmed air.

Rather than the resistor method, go this way for variable heat. Works great. I remounted the controll on the bike plastic. Simple and cheap.

Not sure what sort of gear he was wearing but he is a mainlander so possibly a mesh jacket and some summer gloves...

I've got an adventure ride on in a couple of weeks around our central plateau which gets pretty cold. Here's a vid of one of my rides through there in winter:

Hi Bandit ,
nice video , there are a lot of other bikes on the road , weekend i guess. How cold was it ?
The snow looks nice too, I've been in Orange over 10 years now and have only seen snow like that once , i tried to ride my CX500 to work that day (about 4" of snow on the roads outside of town ) work was 6 miles out of town , gave up went home and drove the car to work .

We will get a report when you get back from your adventure ride ? beautiful
place NZ.

Default .I'm impressed

Hi Bandit...I'm impressed. That video definately put's me in the 'Wous' class! In all honesty, I wouldn't even consider going out if there was snow on the roads. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to leave the kitchen fire...save to get more wood! Rod

I'm not that sure how cold it was - pretty cold! The bikes going the other way had been at the "Cold Kiwi" rally and were bugging out early. There was a real snow storm the night before and maybe they'd had enough of tents in freezing conditions.

Yep, I'll be writing the ride up for sure. Can't wait actually!
