Hi Guys,
I'm planning a diversion on our now annual holiay at Howqua (near Mansfield, VIC), and want to take the Warburton - Woods Point - Jamieson route. Has anyone any experience on this road, will my faithful wee handle this with current Dunlop Roadsmart Sportmax rubber? ![]() Any assistance gratefully received.

The wee will work fine on the road. The only issues that you will have are 4WD's coming the other way around blind corners and it can be slippery after rain.

I have no idea what your riding ability is so I can't comment there. The usual rules should apply. Ride within your limits and if it gets too hard turn back.

Maybe 63 other people, like me thought you were planning a ride for us to join, or had pics for us to look at. Hint there; post a report and pics

Ok - fair enough - here is the report.
I left inner west of Melbourne late (11ish) and headed across town and then on to Warburton for lunch. From there the fun started, with a trip up Reefton Spur (even with 80 limit is entertaining), but there had been a recent bushfire, so plenty of tree debris on road, including one large branch - so please take care. At the top of teh spur, headed right towards Woods Point and the dirt commenced. The next 50 kms or so were a mixture of surfaces from hard packed clay with recently added loose stones on top (very slippery in places), corrugations, hard packed dry clay (relatively smooth and fast) and on to looser dirt. Weather was superb (20 degress and sunny) and highlight was wedge-tailed eagle flying just above me for 100 m at one stage. Beware of logging trucks (x 2) 4wd vehicles (x6) and even those towing off-road vans (x1) as road is narrow in parts with blind corners. Plenty of changes in altitude as well - climbing to ~ 1300 m a one stage - so snow / ice distinct possibility in cooler months. After Woods Point and obligatory servo pic, the road to Jamieson was more of the same, with less altitude changes, and plenty of soft gravel (nearly lost front end at one stage). One horror section of ~ 5 kms of freshly graded clay, still wet from water truck, highlighting how slippery this road would be in the wet. Dunlop Roadsmart Sportmax rubber had no chance - so spent that section at walking pace sqirming everywhere. Movign house soon - so 40 km round trip commute on freeway will become less than 13 min walk to work - so time to put some decent touring hoops on for this sort of stuff - probably Heidenhau K60 for same trip next year. Will report back on success or not of that one. Jamieson - Howqua was easy - lucky - was nearly beer-o-clock by then and skippy was thinking of straying onto the roads. Trip back from Howqua today took in Eildon - Jamieson road (an abolsute cracker, nearly deserted, swith back after swithback for nearly 50 kms around back of Eildon - but again look out for tree debris. On to Alexandra, and back through Yea - Flowerdale for last bit of fun before mixing it with the Morons on ring Road. Awesome riding! And - if you are ever heading to high country, stop over with Ian Lynch at Howqua Valley Views, and some tips on local day rides from there - great accommodation (sleeps nearly 20 I think) and swallowed 4 x families including 9 kids for our stay). Thanks.
Sounds like a good variety of riding to be had. Not keen on the idea of ice or snow though. |
