Rjays Super Topbox Mounting

Hi Guys,

I posted this in the Australia/NZ section coz I figure we are the only ones who buy Rjays top boxes.

Anyway, as you might have already guessed, I have an Rjays Super top box and now I need to mount it on my Vee. At this point in time I am thinking of just using a couple of U-bolts through the rack straight into the box to mount it. I don't need it to be removable so I may not bother with the mounting plate.

Any advice or suggestions ? I've yet to have a good look at it so I am hoping you guys can save me some thinking. I dont like thinking.

Me thinks you'd be better off doing it right and installing the plate as required.

Your idea might work but doing that those top boxes are only hard plastic, it might still bounce around a fair bit of crap roads and start to split the plastic and ruin the top box entirely.

I have an RJAYs top box on mine but with the plate...it was on the bike when i bought it and sits rather firm with the slots the plate and topboz provides...I'd advise not to cut corners when dealing with plastic as I think it'll cost more in the long run.

cheers

Go for the mounting plate, you will be surprised how often you will find it handy to be able to remove the box and strap something on the back of the bike [like a bargain priced set of tyres :fineprint: ].

When doing a trip or riding a rough area put a strap around the whole box and rack and it will stay put.

If you want a free RJ's top box there is one lying off the side of the road between St Albans and Bucketty according to a rider I met at St Albans one day on a ride. [good luck looking for it, the guy spent hours searching with no luck]

So I had a look at the top box this afternoon.

It would appear that I am retarded.

I cannot for the life of me see how anyone is able to fix the plate to the Vstrom's rack using the hardware provided. There are the small square slotted washers which are too small to use as an anchor underneath the rack. Then there are the large wavy metal plates that I suspect are for mounting on tubular racks (these are not even mentioned in the instructions or parts list). They don't fit anywhere under the rack that is useful.

Was anyone able to mount their Rjays top box using the provided hardware, or is it a matter of jury-rigging whatever you can? At this point I am considering drilling three holes through the bike's rack and bolting the plate through those with bloody big bolts.

Here's a picture of how I attached the plate. Screws nearer to the seat are from underneath up with excess length cut off.

Whatever you do, don't have Brisbane Motocycles install it. They installed my first one, lasted two days until plate, mounting brackets and box came off. So much about expert workmanship.

FWIW.....

I had the need to get my top box and mounting plate back home after replacing the Givi panniers with a Happy Trails rack and boxes.

Not the right bits and pieces to do the job "on location", so out with the cable ties :yikes:

The whole lot made it home safely. :yesnod:

I have since transferred the mount to my KLE500 [which now does most of my rough dirt riding], the whole plate is now secured with about nine decent cable ties.
It has sat secure for the last 9,000 km :jawdrop: without showing the slightest sign of coming adrift, the top box normally has a minimum of 3 kg of "bits and pieces", and regularly has another 10-15 kg of gear in it for work days.

If a cable tie breaks it will be a simple job to re-secure the mounting plate on the side of the road without anything more than a knife or side cutters to trim the tail of the tie after tightening it [which is not really a priority at that point anyway].

The Wee now has a mounting plate installed as well, so the box swap takes mere seconds.
It is actually bolted on though, but only because there were already two holes in the rack that lined up with the existing holes in the mounting plate.

When on a road trip with either bike I ALWAYS put two cam lock straps around the whole box and rack just to make sure the box doesn't go AWOL and end up out in the weeds where I can't find it.

I have also developed the habit of putting straps around the panniers on trips as well, having seen several riders with a pannier hanging half off the bike [mainly Beemers  ], and there have been posts on many forums about riders who have lost a pannier on a ride.

If anyone needs a spare OEM Strom aluminium carrier rack as they work on their top box mountings, I have one available if needed.

I recall it is off a Vee, not sure if it will also fit a Wee.

Don't want a whole lot of $ for it, and would just like to see it put to good use by someone who needs one.

Cheers..Tony

Here is a picture of how I attached the mounting plate to my bike. Scooter Auto part Vehicle

I took of the rack, removed the rubber and marked and drilled the mounting plate to line up with the holes in the rack where the plugs from the mat used to go. I then used the nuts bolts and rectangular washers that came with the Top box to bolt it on, loosely at first so that I could still get a spanner in to bolt the rack back on to the bike and then tightened the mounting plate down onto the rack, I would like to replace the bolts with some made from stainless steal and when I do that I will put some kind off packing between the rack and the plate to allow me to tighten the bolts up with out risk of distorting the mounting plate.

I hope this helps.
