Gravel Ride, SE QLD

Had a great weekend ride. Started in Beaudesert - met up with 4 blokes from BNE to guide them around some of the beautiful state forests and national parks around here and northern NSW. A 400 km loop with plenty of gravel, dirt, and 4WD tracks, rainforest, lakes, waterfalls, river crossings etc. Got bloody cold camping out but both Sat & Sun were beautiful blue skies.

Have posted a few photos on FaceBook HERE. There were 2 Kwaka KLR650s, a Yamaha Tenere and a BMW 1150GS, as well as my VStrom 650.

I haven't fitted any crash bars or bash plate yet but can see they'd be good to protect the oil filter and oil cooler.

I'd be happy to post the route details here if anyone wants to know.

Great pics Steve, looks like a good ride with plenty of different road/track conditions. A map would be good if I ever get up that way again.

Gravel Ride Route

Acerider, you can view the Facebook pics without joining FB.
I'd like to mark out the route on Google Maps but it doesn't think the road goes through in one section. In the meantime here is the route we took. I printed this out and had it on my tank bag so it was pretty easy to follow.
Best map I've found of this area is the NRMA "Far North Coast - NSW, Touring Map 6".

The Condamine river crossings took longer than I expected and we made lots of stops for photos, boil the billy etc. By the time we got to Paddy's Crossing it was getting late. It was so nice we decided to camp there rather than rush to our intended campsite before dark. So we shortened the route a bit, doing about 200kms each day. Average speed was just under 40kms hour, including stops, and a detour up a side track and a couple minor incidents/falls.

I'm thinking an easy re-run of this would be to go the opposite way & call it "The Wrong Way Round".

DAY 1, 258 km allow 7 hrs 9:30 - 4PM

Stage 1, 120 km (3 hrs) Beaudesert to QMary Falls via White Swamp, Condamine River & Killarney (food, toilet)
Start point at Beaudesert (could be 230 km to next fuel stop)
32 km (25 min) to Rathdowney (there is a fuel station but usually closed)
24 km Boonah-Rathdowney Rd thru Maroon & 4km beyond to Burnett Creek Rd. Click HERE for a map. (It doesn't turn to gravel until you're past the lake).
14 kms (1/4 hr) right into Fletcher Road. 3 kms T-intersection, Carney's Creek Road. Turn left,
6 kms T-intersection & turn left into Mt Wilson Rd, which soon becomes White Swamp Rd.
8 kms to Head Gate Rd. Turn right. 5 kms cross NSW border (SCENIC Rabbit Fence), turn left into sealed Spring Creek Rd.
1 km right into Condamine River Rd
20 kms of gravel & 14 river crossings. 3kms from Killarney do NOT turn right into Killarney. Continue 2kms down to Main Rd and turn left.
NOTE Killarney fuel Sat 8 - 12 noon, closed Sunday. http://www.killarneycoop.com/service_station.htm
1 km left into Spring Creek Rd, up to Queen Mary Falls & The Falls Cafe SCENIC, food, toilet, LUNCH

Stage 2, 110 km (3 hrs) (could cut out Drake to save time)
5 km back to Killarney Rd
2 km to Arcacia Creek (just over NSW border) (could cut to save time - if you need fuel pop into nearby Legume. It was open Saturday afternoon))
4 km right into Scrub Rd
6 km left into Legume-Woodenbong Rd
10 km to Tooloom turn off. (3km to Tooloom SCENIC)
13 km to Wallaby Creek, right into Upper Tooloom Rd
