Fairly new to the forum but bought and decked out a new Black 2011 V-Strom 650A a few months back. I have taken many cross country Road Trips on my 2004 Wing and have about 226k on it now after 7+ years but this will be my first Cross Country Road Trip on the Wee.
I’m leaving in the morning on my new ride for an approximately 6,000 mile trek out West. Approximately 3 1/2 weeks on the road and I'm gong to do some camping this trip as well (first for me) .
For those that like to read about my adventure and these types of road trips I will be trying to update my web page daily if you'd like to tag along. Here's the direct link from my web page where I will hopefully enter daily journal entires and share pictures ...
Wish me luck ... hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew but I've a feeling the Wee and I are going to have many miles together as well over the next few years.
Suggested stops...with advance reservations----
Baldwin Seats in Baldwin City, Kansas, or Russell Day-Long Seats in Shasta Lake city, CA, or Mr. Ed's Moto seats in Albany, OR.
Absolutely ... way ahead of you. When I picked up my Wee a couple of months back it didn't take long to realize if I was going to do any long distance on it I'd have to have another seat. I made a walk-in appointment with Russell Day-Long in Shasta California and my appointment is on May 27th ... Now if I can just some how get around all this crappy weather between me and my new Russell seat out in California. Made it into Kansas City tonight.
Wow, does this sound familiar. I got my high school buddy into dirtbike riding (fire roads and Saddleback Park) in So Cal in the mid 70s. We dreamed of taking a cross country ride after graduating high school in '75. Never happened. Fast forward 25 or so years. He's gotten back into riding, now on the street for a couple years and I propose that one way or another as we're coming up on the 30th reunion (neither of us attended) and then our 50th birthdays that it was time to do that trip we long dreamed about. I do about getting a bike (settled on a wee - a great choice) and sure enough, the Spring after our 50th birthdays we took off on a 9 day, 3000 mile thorough CA, OR, WA, ID. It was everything we had dreamed it could be. Followed the next year with a trip through NV and UT. The next year an extended weekend trip in No Cal. He's off the bike for a few years, but in 2014 we'll be heading for Yellowstone. Good stuff. Have a great ride.
Finally got a chance to catch up with the end of your trip. Sorry the ankle and the weather had such a negative impact on the trip (I got quite a taste of the bad weather as I rode from near Sacramento into Oregon on May 31 - very wet!). Glad I didn't experience the winds you did in your last couple days.
So, a couple weeks later...how is the ankle doing?
Doing better ... thanks for asking. Hard to get something like that to heal quickly when you have to use it to some degree each day. Not being on the road for a while now has helped. Yep ... more weather on that road trip that I've had to deal with on any of my cross country road trips in the past. This year's weather has been very strange everywhere.
great report! I have done a lot of trips myself but I dont think I can measure up to your bad experience. job well done.
