As a web developer myself, I know the truth of that statement. Customizing forums can be especially tricky if you're trying to add some functionality the original developers didn't think of.
And some quick research shows that the vBulletin developers did not include this functionality. Fortunately though, lots of people have requested it and a number of solutions have been created. This mod seems to be just the ticket, and apparently will work with the vBulletin version we're running: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=143951
Anyway, thanks for considering what I think would be a useful addition.
