How very law-abiding of you! I took the driver's test and got my first license in 1996, then took the "code" again and motorcycle stuff in 2011. Big pain in the ass, but I don't regret the learning experience (now that it's over).

I did the moto exam first, then the auto. What a bureaucratic quagmire that was. Took about 1 year before I had a exam date for the code. Technically I should put the red A on the back of my bike. The first 1.5 years over here I rode with my CA license, then found out it wasn't valide beyond the first year. I parked my bike in a garage for about 16 months until I got the french license last year.

Sounds cool. I'm sure you'll love the bike. This is my first real bike, after taking the pain-in-the-ass French moto driver's test a year ago. There are so many nice places to ride in France, it's amazing. I have a couple of routes that might interest you when you head south. I'll note your e-mail and drop you a message for reference.

    Take care,

Hi, well I'm from San Diego but spent alot of time in Marin over the years. I lived there full time from 2004-2007. The road can be alot of fun, but I also has some very close calls - with deer on foggy nights and with crazy drivers on wet roads. I almost always took hwy 1 along the coast to go to work and went back over panoramic. Hwy 1 in the early morning was always fantastic, especially when you break out of the fog and no one on the road.
I've been in Paris for 5 years. Don't know Montpellier at all, but I've been down to the Var a couple of times. My riding mostly involves negotiating Parisian traffic, although every once in while I get out on the road just for fun. I should have my new bike on Saturday morning, then I'll take it out for a good 'rodage'. I'm getting it from the same shop where I bought the '08. They will take the trade in and gave me a fairly good deal on the 2012. I'll post a few pics when I get the bike.

    Hi there -

I've been wondering when we'd meet... actually I meant to write to you, but I was waiting for you to post the pic of your new 2012. You'd love the riding down near here... as far as you want to go, as mountainy as you may want it.

In any case, I'm actually from Mill Valley (Tam High class of '81). Your commute sounds fun! I've been living in Montpellier for many years.

The top case is a Shad 48 liter. Holds 2 full-face helmets.

The messaging here is pretty limited, so why don't you drop me an e-mail at I'm sure you can guess my name from that...

Fellow Californian here living in Paris. I have my 2012 vstrom coming on Saturday. I spent 3 years living in Stinson and commuting to SF on my 2004 vstrom. Now on a 2008 which I'm trading in on the new one. Can you tell me if that is the Givi E55 top case? I'm ordering one with my new bike. Nice photo.
